Harold Blair Owen of Montclair, Calif., died Aug. 3 surrounded by family after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 8, 1952, to Peggy Lee (née Hildebrand) and Harold “Tex” Owen in Long Beach, Calif. Harold, known to most as Blair, grew up in the Lakewood area and graduated from Paramount High School in 1970.
Blair married Sharon (née Smith) on June 20, 1970, at University Baptist Church in Long Beach and they had three daughters, Arrissia, Chiana and Brea. They lived in Huntington Beach before relocating to Ontario, Calif. They ended their marriage in 1987 and Blair returned to Lakewood.
Blair worked as a meatcutter at various southern California markets including McCoys, Gemco, Vons, Albertsons and Lucky’s before becoming a truck owner operator. He enjoyed camping, classic cars and trucks, riding motorcycles, playing guitar and dining out.
Family gatherings were a big focus for Blair—he was a family man first and foremost. He became best friends with Sharon’s second husband, Joe Pellegrino, and together the three co-parented their daughters and grandchildren.
Blair is survived by Arrissia Owen and her partner Jeff Hamer of Big Bear Lake; Chiana Brown and her husband George Brown of Yucaipa; and Brea Owen and her partner Mike Nelson of Garden Grove. Blair has many grandchildren, including Ambrossia, Devin and Jordan Baltazar, Joey Velasquez, Chloe Turner and Keith Hamer. Through his daughters’ blended families, Blair’s grandchildren tally increased, adding Kaylee Nelson and Jaden Velasquez; and Andy and Tyler Brown.
Blair was also very close to his sister, Joy Lee Brooks, and his aunt Juanita Owen. His nieces Jill Garnett (husband Paul), of Colorado, and Jenny Tucker (husband Glenn), of Whittier, brought more children to the clan who he considered grandkids, as well: Sammy and Liam Garnett and James Tucker. He also had two half-brothers, Jimmy Owen, of Rhode Island, and Chuck Owen, of Massachusetts. His dog, Sissy, will also miss her big guy.
Blair’s parents, Peggy and Harold, preceded him in death, as well as his grandparents Ethel and Forest Owen and Opal and Blair Hildebrand, and his Uncle Jimmy Owen.
